Black and white photographs of families.

When we photograph families people often comment how much they love the black and white photographs. Creating images in black and white gives them a classic and timeless feel. Portraits work so well as the simplicity of the image means the eye is focused on the people. Black and white photographs are also a brilliant way to update your photo displays as it gives them a unique feel which doesn’t feel out of date.

Not all photographs work in black and white so for the best results at Scaramanga Photography we look at the following things. First of all will the background work in black and white. Is there enough contrast with the subject? Is the background too busy? Secondly what will the clothes look like in black and white? Simple designs like stripes and checked patterns can work really well in black and white. Thirdly it’s important to have the right light. If the light is too hard the shadows may look very dark in black and white.

We love colour photography too so like to have a mix of colour and black and white. This way we can decide the images which work best in colour and the ones that work best in black and white. We shoot everything in colour so there is always the option to do whatever you want!
