Best advice on group shots
At Scaramanga photography we focus on capturing moments at a wedding telling the story of the day in a natural, unobtrusive way. As this style is so popular brides and grooms are often unsure about group shots. The dilemma is how to have some group shots without the day becoming one long photo shoot! After years of experience we have come up with our tips for the best group shots.
Plan ahead
Brides and grooms often say they don’t want formal or groups shots only to decide on the day to have some. We are very flexible and can always do extra shots but it’s better to plan ahead if you can. It works best if you plan who you want in the group shots in advance. Giving the list of who you want in each photograph to the photographer and the best man really helps things go smoothly. Often the time it taken up by trying to find a missing family member who is needed for the photograph but can’t be found. Groomsman assisting the best man to find people and organise things really helps. Let the groomsmen know that this is one of their jobs for the day!
Keep things simple
Limiting the number of group shots to your key groups is also a great way to help things run quickly. Think about who you really want to be photographed with and who is important. Quality is much better than quantity when it comes to group shots. Our tip is to keep group shots to ten or less if you can.
Aerial photography
Having a photograph of everyone at your wedding is a lovely record of the day but can be hard to do in practice. Using traditional cameras it takes time to assemble a large group staggering people at different heights so they can all be seen. You usually need an area with steps which is often not available at many venues. At Scaramanga photography we’ve come up with a novel solution to this problem. Ian is a fully qualified drone operator so can do aerial photography. Doing group shots with a drone is quick, easy and fun with fantastic results. There’s no need for steps or staggering people so you can do the photograph in no time at all!
